Tamil Nadu pilgrims embark on journey to Katchatheevu Island for Church festival

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Many fishermen from Tamil Nadu’s Rameswaram on Friday (15) left for Katchatheevu Island to participate in the St. Antony’s Church Festival, the Asian News International (ANI) reported.

Amid tight vigil, the pilgrims, mostly local fishermen went through security before boarding the boats.

Katchatheevu Island, an uninhabited island controlled by Sri Lanka, is located between Neduntheevu, Sri Lanka and Rameswaram. It is used by both Sri Lankan and as well as Indian Tamil fishermen. Speaking to ANI, a devotee, Raj Kumar Mosus, said: “It is Saint Anthony who always stands with us at the time of any difficulty in the sea. He is our saviour and it is only to show our gratitude to him every year that we travel to Katchatheevu and offer our prayers.”

Similar remarks came from Vicar GeneraL Sivangai, Joseph Loothuraja. “We are embarking upon this journey to thank Saint Anthony who has been kind enough to shower his blessings on us. He has blessed us with prosperity, peace and brotherhood. By travelling and offering prayers, we also urge for peace in Sri Lanka,” said Loothuraja.
