Philippine Government extends humanitarian assistance to Sri Lanka

(UDHAYAM, MANILLA) – The Government of the Republic of the Philippines has donated US$ 100,000 to Sri Lanka as humanitarian assistance to those affected by the Cyclone Roanu in May 2016 that left over 200 people dead and caused US$ 1.7 billion in damages throughout the island.

Acting Secretary Enrique Manalo officially handed the check to Sri Lanka Ambassador to the Philippines, Aruni Ranaraja, at a ceremony today at the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

Chief Coordinator Leah Ruiz Basinang, Assistant Secretary for Asian and Pacific Affairs Millicent Cruz-Paredes, Assistant Secretary for Fiscal Management Services and other officers of the DFA were also present.

The DFA said the donation will be used by Sri Lanka to finance a community drinking water program in Aranayake, where the storm triggered a massive landslide.

Tropical Storm Roanu hit Sri Lanka on May 15, 2016 and caused floods in 22 out of 25 districts of the country. The flooding claimed lives and destroyed a large number of homes and important infrastructure.
