Damages due to bad weather under assessment

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Disaster Management Centre says the estimation of damages to houses destroyed or damaged by the inclement weather has commenced.

Deputy Director and Media Spokesman Pradeep Kodippili said necessary financial aid for the victims has already been forwarded to District Secretaries.

He requested displaced families to obtain the aid via the nearest Grama Niladhari Officer, after providing necessary details. He added the adverse weather prevalent over the country is gradually receding as of yesterday.

However strong winds and heavy rain along with landslides have been reported in the Ratnapura District.

Kodippili noted more than 40,000 people have been evacuated to temporary shelters.

Pradeep Kodippili on a separate note said the water levels of the Kalu River and its branches are still experiencing high water levels, adding that water levels have begun receding.

The Nilwala River, he said, which was also at spill level has also begun receding.
