(UTV|COLOMBO) – From the 300,000 students sitting for the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level (A/L) only 200,000 pass the examination thus qualifying for university education although only 33,000 get placement in universities.
The Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) is preparing themselves to absorb all the rest of the qualified students to teach various subjects in the field of data science.
There is a dearth of opportunities for data science related jobs in the world. The starting salary of a data scientist is around USD 90,000 per annum. The starting salary in Sri Lanka for a data scientist is beyond Rs. 90,000. With the increase of experience the salary rises rapidly.
Dialog has consented to offer internships and logistical support to students of OUSL.
The data scientists are under-utilised by most organisations in Sri Lanka because its an emerging subject domain.
The data scientists could predict the future in a number of fields. Knowing the future in advance help businesses to grow faster.
The ultimate aim of this initiative is to help improving per capita income beyond USD 10,000 before long.
Professor Ariyadorai and Dr. Madurapperuma with the faculty are heavily engaged in getting this off the ground.
