Premier affirms Sri Lanka’s commitment to ensure regional peace and security in South Asia

(UDHAYAM, TOKYO) – Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has affirmed that Sri Lanka is committed to ensure the regional peace and security in South Asia and will not allow any of its ports to be used for military purposes of foreign countries.

The Prime Minister emphasized that Sri Lanka would be dedicated with responsibilities to safeguard the free ocean navigation and peace in the region. He declared that the security responsibilities of the harbors in Sri Lanka are vested only with the Sri Lanka Navy.

Delivering a lecture on ‘The Sri Lankan understanding of the global situation and importance of Japan’ at a conference in Tokyo today, Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said the basis of world trade is the Indo Pacific Region and it will be transformed into the world’s most important region in the future.

The Prime Minister pointed out that all affiliated countries should take the initiatives of consolidating free ocean travel in the region and safeguarding peace.

The conference was jointly organized by the Japan Trade and Industries Chamber, the Japan Sri Lanka Business Cooperation Committee and Japan’s new Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization under the guidance of the Japan Foreign Trade Organization. Nearly 300 leading Japanese entrepreneurs attended the conference.

Minister Malik Samarawickrema addressing the conference said that a friendly environment is being created in Sri Lanka for the benefit of investors and entrepreneurs. The Minister mentioned that laws are being enacted in the island nation so that all tasks could be met via one institution.
