Mangala complains against TV channel for distorting Fowzie’s statement

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Minister of Finance, Mangala Samaraweera yesterday (25) lodged a complaint at the Elections Commission against a private television (TV) channel for distorting a statement made by former Minister A. H. M. Fowzie.

In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Elections Commission, Minister Samaraweera stated that the TV channel in concern had claimed that Fowzie had called for the assassination of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Presidential candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

The letter further clarifies that Fowzie never made any such statement during his speech at a rally held in Colombo and that the former Minister had only called for the defeat of Rajapaksa at the forthcoming Presidential Election as a means of safeguarding the future of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP).

Samaraweera in his letter has pointed out that the TV channel in concern is attempting to incite communal unrest and has called on the Elections Commission to take appropriate action.
