One-year since constitutional crisis; Lamp-lighting at Independence Square

(UTV|COLOMBO) – A large group of citizens’ organisations, the Civil Society and Trade Unions Collective, to hold a lamp lighting ceremony at Independence Square at 7.00 this evening (26) to commemorate 1-year since the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was suddenly sacked and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was controversially appointed as Prime Minister on 26 October, 2018, sparking a constitutional crisis with his illegal 52-day Government.

The entire exercise was subsequently rendered illegal and the brief substitute regime was dissolved after judicial rulings.

Today’s lamp-lighting is open to all as a public ceremony to reaffirm citizens’ commitment to sustain democratic life and “To end the darkness of that dark era forever”, event organisers said.

“We urge all citizens to participate in remembering not only the attempted power grab, but also the people’s courage to resist and reverse it.”
