UK pledges to support prison reforms in SL

(UTV|COLOMBO) – British High Commissioner in Sri Lanka, Sarah Hulton has said that the UK is ready to provide technical assistance on prison reforms and in the process of drafting legislation in Sri Lanka, the Justice Ministry yesterday said.

In a statement, the Ministry said High Commissioner Hulton expressed these views when she called on Justice, Human Rights and Legal Reforms Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva at the Ministry yesterday.

At the meeting, Minister Silva briefed the High Commissioner on the legal reforms and prison reforms the new government was expecting to make.

Ms Hulton commended the ongoing reforms and said they are ready to provide expert knowledge on prison and legal reforms.

Minister Siripala said that it was the policy of the new government of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to ensure that all communities are entitled to equality of law.

He said the government will continue to work for all citizens irrespective of their political views. “We will uphold the supremacy of law,” he said.
