NTC opens first bus terminal in Northern Province

(UDHAYAM, VAVUNIYA) – Passenger bus terminal in Vavuniya, the first transport terminal built by the National Transport Commission (NTC) in Northern Province was opened by the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Nimal Siripala De Silva and the Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiudeen on Monday (16).

Minister Bathiudeen speaking at the event said, “This area was to a great extent decimated amid the war, buildings were demolished and the war forced many people to flee the area, yet now that we have accomplished peace, the Government is responsible to redevelop these areas.”

“We perceived that a transport terminal in Vavuniya is been required for quite a while, and now at last it is a reality,” the Minister stressed.

“Amid the past administration, I, as the Co-Chairman of the District Development Committee, over and again ask for the need of a passenger transport terminal,” he said adding “However I should express gratitude toward Former Minister C. B. Ratnayake, he stepped up with regards to build this terminal, and after that Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva expeditiously provided necessary energy to complete the developments. Therefore of their energetic endeavours, today we appreciate having the advantage of an advanced passenger transport terminal.”

Built at a cost of Rs. 195 million by the NTC with all facilities, the three acre- terminal can park about 34 buses including inter-provincial services, and provincial services buses. It will also operate about 100 buses to and from Jaffna.

Bus operation rooms of Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB), and Road Passenger Transport Authority, two 24-hour cafeterias, a Police post, and the sanitary facilities have also been established at this new terminal. Special entrance and sanitary facilities are also provided for differently abled people.

The new terminal will provide a solution to the congestion and difficulties faced by the passengers, residents, and the businessmen in the surrounding area.

Deputy Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Ashok Abeysinghe, and the Governor of the Northern Province Reginald Cooray also participated.
