President to visit Dhaka next month

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – President Maithripala Sirisena is scheduled to visit Dhaka next month on a four-day visit at the invitation of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina, the Bangladesh News24 reported.

Accordingly, President Sirisena is scheduled to visit Dhaka from July 13 to July 16, the Foreign Ministry said on Monday (05) in a statement.

Bangladesh has announced a $500,000 cash assistance for the Sri Lankan floods and landslides victims.

The May 25 flood killed over 200 people and caused severe damage to livelihood and properties of thousand others.

The Foreign Ministry said Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, both members of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), are enjoying “friendly” bilateral relations.

“The two countries have commonalities in values and culture, and share similar developmental aspirations,” it added.

President Sirisena earlier visited Bangladesh as Health Minister.

His predecessor Mahinda Rajapaksa visited Bangladesh in April 2011.
