“The Last Jedi” and “Jumanji” top Christmas box-office

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Final figures for the three-day Christmas box-office are in and Forbes reports that Rian Johnson’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” dropped a decidedly steep 67% in its second weekend for an actual haul of $72 million.

That’s a massive $148 million drop from its $220 million debut weekend. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” dropped off by $149 million following its record-breaking opening weekend in 2015, but it started from a notably higher place so its % drop was nowhere near as steep. Despite the plunge, the film is expected to pass the $400 million domestic and $800 million worldwide mark by the end of Christmas Day.

Sony’s “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” proved a hit, taking in $36 million over Friday to Sunday and will have grossed $67 million by the end of Christmas Day. “Pitch Perfect 3,” the likely last film in the franchise, debuted to $20 million from Friday to Sunday – down massively from the $69 million opening weekend of the second film.

Fox’s musical “The Greatest Showman” tanked, pulling just $8.8 million Friday to Sunday and closing out its Wednesday to Monday run with just $18.6 million. Faring even worse was the Matt Damon-led comedy “Downsizing” and the Owen Wilson comedy “Father Figures” which opened to $4.9 million and $3.3 million respectively from Friday to Sunday.

In limited release, Steven Spielberg’s “The Post” did excellent business with a $55,000 per screen average across nine screens.
