Envoy raises concerns over social media restrictions

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Australian High Commissioner in Colombo, Bryce Hutchesson, on Monday (12) said that it was high time to lift the ban on social media in the country.

“Time, overdue, to lift Sri Lanka’s blanket blocking of key social media platforms – a blunt instrument,” Hutchesson tweeted yesterday. US Ambassador Atul Keshap had also raised concerns over the ban on certain social media platforms.

“Social media is an imperfect, evolving and fluid platform that uses new technology to connect and reflect human societies as whole, including the good and bad. Hate-filled people who exploit news ways to fan the flames of intolerance and violence are the real main culprits,” Keshap tweeted.
