“Quiet Place” soars to USD 50 million opening

(UTV|COLOMBO) – John Krasinski’s horror thriller “A Quiet Place” has burst out of the game at the box-office with a very impressive $50 million domestic opening haul, an average of $14,253 per cinema.

Costing just $17 million, the film received rave reviews from critics but a softer B+ CinemaScore from audiences. Internationally it grossed a further $21 million, giving it a global total of $71 million after one weekend.

Steven Spielberg’s “Ready Player One” slipped to second with a further $25 million, down just 40%, for a total of $96.9 million to date domestically and $391.3 million internationally with much of it ($160+ million) from China.

Debuting in third place was the critically acclaimed comedy “Blockers” which opened to a strong $21.4 million – on par with the film’s budget. The film also grossed a further $10.7 million overseas.

“Black Panther” slipped to fourth with another $8.4 million to push its eight-week domestic total to $665.4 million, passing “Titanic” to become the third-biggest release of all time in North America behind only “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($936.7 million) and “Avatar” ($760.5 million).

“I Can Only Imagine” closed out the Top 5 with a further $8.4 million and a $69 million total. Political drama “Chappaquiddick” debuted in seventh place with $6.2 million.
