“Transylvania” beats “Skyscraper” at box-office

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Animated family comedy “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation” easily beat out Dwayne Johnson’s new action vehicle at the weekend box-office this week. The Sony animated sequel starring Adam Sandler amongst others raked in $44 million domestically and easily took the top spot.

“Skyscraper” meanwhile, Johnson’s third starring vehicle in the last eight months following the “Jumanji” sequel and “Rampage,” came in third with $25.5 million – the lowest opening for a Johnson-starrer in recent years. Review aggregate scores were mixed and on par with “Rampage”.

Squeezed in between was the second weekend of Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp” which took in a further $29.5 million with that film now on a global total of $284 million. “Incredibles 2” and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” are neck-and-neck for fourth and fifth with $16 million and $15.5 million respectively.

The highly acclaimed “Sorry to Bother You” went wide onto 800 screens and managed to get into seventh place with a very solid $4.3 million. Bo Burnham’s “Eighth Grade” scored not just ecstatic reviews but the best per screen average of the year so far with a $63,000 per screen haul from four screens. Gus Van Sant’s “Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot” also opened on four screens to a very healthy $20,780 per screen average.
