“Equalizer 2” beats “Mamma Mia” at Box-Office

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Sony Pictures’ “The Equalizer 2” edged out “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” at the box-office this weekend.

The R-rated violent sequel, the first of Denzel Washington’s career, grossed an estimated domestic total of $35.82 million for the three-day weekend – beating not just the original but also industry tracking figures and becoming the biggest opening of director Antoine Fuqua’s career.

The “Mamma Mia” follow-up nabbed a three-day weekend total of $34.38 million, well above the $27.7 million opening of the first film. It also grossed a further another $42.4 million overseas.

The animated “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation” fell to third place with $23.15 million and has a worldwide total of $206 million so far.

“Ant-Man and The Wasp” was fourth with estimated $16.1 million domestically and now sits at $354 million worldwide. “Incredibles 2” was fifth with a further $11.5 million and is raking it in with $940.4 million worldwide so far.
