(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – S. Thomas’ College Mount-Lavinia has drafted in Former World Cup winning Coach Dav Whatmore for a stint as a consultant ahead of the Annual Big Match with Royal College Colombo.
The World Cup winning Coach had two stints with the national side from 1995-1997 and 1999-2003. Whatmore guided the Arjuna Ranathunga led team to World Cup glory in 1996 and a year later joined English county Lancashire. He returned to Sri Lanka in 1999 and went onto complete a four year term. Since then, he has coached the national teams of Bangladesh, Pakistan and Zimbabwe.
Sri Lankan born Whatmore, is now slated to have a brief stint with S. Thomas’ as a Consultant and will guide the under-19 cricketers in the lead up to the Annual Big Match.
Whatmore was quoted by Cricbuzz as saying, “It’s a huge honour to be involved in such a prestigious encounter. These school kids are learning the game and I am happy to help their progress.”
The 138th Battle of the Blues will be worked off from the 9th to the 11th of March at the SSC Grounds. The Roy-Tho was first played in 1879 and the three-day encounter has been played every year since without a break.
Whatmore himself attended Royal College in Colombo before migrating to Australia in 1960s.
