6.4 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks North Mariana Islands’ Anatahan

(UTV|COLOMBO) A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck centred east-northeast of Anatahan in the Northern Mariana Islands, said the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake struck nearly 33 miles deep at about 99 miles east-northeast of Anatahan.

Earlier, the quake was measured 6.6 on the Richter scale but later the USGS downgraded the magnitude to 6.4. The earthquake which lasted for around 30 seconds only and gave two major jolts, could be felt on Guam.

However, no reports of any sort were made to 911 of casualties, damages or injuries from the earthquake, said the Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defence.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service also said that there is no tsunami threat to Guam or the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) from the earthquake.
