(UTV|COLOMBO) – Filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron’s acclaimed and deeply personal black-and-white drama “Roma” has taken home the Gold Lion at the 2018 Venice Film Festival.
The story follows two domestic workers caring for a small family in 1970s Mexico City and is currently set for a Netflix release combined with a limited theatrical run.
The “Gravity” helmer collected the prize from friend Guillermo del Toro who won the Gold Lion (And ultimately the Oscar Best Picture) with “The Shape of Water” last year.
Other winners at Venice this year were Yorgos Lanthimos’ blackly comedic period piece “The Favourite” with Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone. That film nabbed the Grand Jury Prize, the second most prestigious title at the festival, along with a Best Actress nod for Colman.
Also winning were Willem Dafoe who scored a Best Actor nod for his work as Vincent van Gogh in “At Eternity’s Gate,” Jacques Audiard for his directing on the western “The Sisters Brothers,” the Coens for their screenplay for the Netflix series-turned-film “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” and Jennifer Kent’s “The Nightingale” which took home both a Special Jury Prize and a Best Newcomer award for Baykali Ganambarr.
Despite a huge amount of buzz from screenings, Bradley Cooper’s “A Star is Born” screened out of competition and thus was ineligible for awards consideration.
