Toppled trees, swift water have killed 32 in Florence

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Florence — which was once a hurricane and now is a tropical depression — is being blamed for at least 32 deaths in the Carolinas and Virginia. 25 were in North Carolina. Officials in those states are still worried about what’s to come because it’s still raining and rivers are swelling. Several of the people who died in recent days were swept up in stormwaters. Three small children have been killed, two from falling trees.

Florence kept dumping rain on North Carolina and officials warned residents that ‘the worst is yet to come’ from a storm that has already killed at least eight people, as rivers inland were likely to flood. Lisa Bernhard reports

A 1-year-old boy was swept into floodwaters Sunday when the car his mother was driving came upon rushing water. The water from a nearby creek in Union County had risen quickly, and the current was swift. Dazia Lee told local media that she isn’t from the area and was unfamiliar with the roads. The water pushed her car off the road and left her stuck in a group of trees, authorities said.
