(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says a new trade system based on rural manufactures in order to uplift the rural economy will be introduced.
Addressing an event in Colombo this morning the Prime Minister said at present the rural economy is faced with severe setbacks.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said the rural economy is rapidly deteriorating adding that today the urban economy is more urbanized.
The Premier said the urban economy will move towards the Middle East, Italy, Korea Malaysia and Singapore, but the rural economy will remain behind adding that this loss will be felt by those in rural areas.
Premier Wickremesinghe then questioned as to how villages could be modernized.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said if production in villages is developed the government will allow crops to be solved in villages.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe also said the government is taking necessary steps towards developing the private sector in order to ensure the farming community in the country reaps all benefits.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said small aspects must be considered when development the country in order to introduce a new economy.
Premier Wickremesinghe said the Agrarian Service Authority will see how the private sector can contribute towards assisting farmers adding that the government wishes to introduce this programme by the end of the year.
The Premier said the government will ensure there are no shortages so that government can engage in exports.
