Customs Trade Unions to reach a decision on strike today

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Customs Trade Unions Alliance will reach a decision on their trade union action on Tuesday (05), specifically as if they are withdrawing from essential services.

The Alliance to continue the work-to-rule strike action today (05) as well, in protest over the Government’s decision to appoint retired Navy Officer, Rear Admiral Shamal Fernando as the new Director General of Sri Lanka Customs.

The Cabinet of Ministers recently approved the replacement of incumbent Customs Director General, P. S. M. Charles.

Meanwhile, the Finance Ministry appointed H. G. Sumanasinghe, the Director General – Department of Management Services of the Ministry as the Acting Director General of the Sri Lanka Customs until the matter is resolved.

It is learnt that over 2,000 cargo containers have been stationed at the Colombo Harbour without necessary clearance as a result of the work-to-rule strike action launched last week.
