Power crisis to be resolved in April

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Ministry of Power says all necessary steps are being taken to rapidly end the power crisis.

Secretary to the Ministry Dr. Suren Batagoda said the purchase and conservation of electricity are primary goals.

The Secretary said two power plants had exhausted their contracts, a 24 Megawatt power plant in Matara and a 50 megawatt power plant in Sapugaskanda.

He noted the plants had been utilized to generate power for the the past decade.

Batagoda added power generation will recommence from next week and once generation starts the electricity shortage will be solved.

The Secretary said Municipal Councils had been asked to control the number of street lamps turned while the public had been requested to conserve electricity wherever possible by switching off unnecessary lights.

Finally Batagoda added they hoped the electricity shortage would be eradicated within the month of April.
