United Nations Security Council condemns Easter Blasts in Sri Lanka

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has condemned the Easter Sunday (21) bombings in Sri Lanka as “Heinous and cowardly terrorist attacks.”

The United Nations (UN)’s most powerful body issued a statement Monday (22) expressing sympathy and the need to hold perpetrators of the violence accountable.

Sri Lanka’s UN mission plans a memorial meeting Wednesday for diplomats based at the world organisation’s headquarters in New York.

Through a Spokeswoman, UN Secretary-General António Guterres of Portugal expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and the people and Government of Sri Lanka.

At least 310 people were killed and hundreds more injured in a series of explosions across Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday, one of the most sacred days of the year for Christians.

A series of eight explosions in the island country during Easter celebrations on Sunday targeted Churches, hotels and also an area close to the capital’s Zoological Garden and near Dematagoda, Colombo’s suburb.

Most of the terror attacks were committed in the capital city of Colombo.
