“Prince of Egypt,” “Sideways” become musicals

(UTV|COLOMBO) – A new stage musical based on Dreamworks Animation’s 1998 animated feature “The Prince of Egypt,” an adaptation of “Exodus” about the journey of Moses out of Ancient Egypt, is on the way and will open early next year at London’s Dominion Theatre for a 32-week engagement.

The stage production features an expanded score by “Wicked” composer Stephen Schwartz, including the Oscar-winning song “When You Believe” recorded by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey along with ten new songs to join the five from the film.

Scott Schwartz will direct with choreography by Sean Cheesman, while Philip LeZebnik is penning the musical’s book. No plans for Broadway or other commercial engagements to follow have yet been set.

Broadway shouldn’t feel left out though as a stage musical adaptation of Alexander Payne’s R-rated wine-themed dramedy “Sideways” is on the way for the Great White Way.

Rex Pickett, who penned the novel upon which the film is based, is teaming with EFG-Renascence Productions to develop a musical based on the book and film.

Plans are to extend the intellectual property across multiple media platforms and brands. The original film cost $16 million to make and grossed over $100 million worldwide along with scoring five Oscar nominations.

Pickett will pen the musical along with composer Anthony Adams who will be recording six original songs. No timeline has been announced for the show.
