Human Rights Commission requests Acting IGP to take action to prevent communal unrest

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has requested the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Chandana Wickramaratne to take heed of early warning signs, including complaints and appeals by residents, and take preventive action when there is even the slightest hint of communal unrest.

The letter, signed by HRCSL Chairperson Dr. Deepika Udagama, requested the Acting IGP to address problematic issues observed by the HRCSL consequent to communal violence that broke out on 12 and 13 May in in the North-Western Province, Chilaw District, and Minuwangoda Town.

Dr. Udagama stressed the need of providing “Reinforcement to those areas early, not after the event.”

HRCSL Chairperson requested the Acting IGP to ensure that no undue political or other external interventions are tolerated, and that strict legal action be taken against those who obstruct Police Officers from performing their duties.
