HRCSL issues guidelines for Police during arrests

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka has introduced a set of guidelines for the Police to be followed when arresting suspects.

Speaking to a prominent online news portal, Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission Deepika Udagama said they received several complaints over illegal arrests following the Easter Sunday terror attacks.

However, the Chairperson noted there had been a decrease in the number of complaints received in comparison to complaints lodged during previous emergency periods.

Udagama added although Emergency Regulations and the Prevention of Terrorism Act had been enacted there had not been any complaints of harassment.

She further noted investigations had revealed of several cases where individuals were arrested on complaints lodged against them pertaining to suspicious activities without sufficient investigations.
