Lankan student killed in hit and run outside Melbourne campus

(UTV|COLOMBO) – A young Sri Lankan woman has had her life cut short in a savage hit in run outside her university campus in Australia, the Daily Mail reported.

Sri Lankan student Nisala Perera, 20, was hit by a wagon metres from the Monash University campus gates, in Clayton, Melbourne on Thursday night.

Detectives believe she was hit at 9.45 pm while crossing Wellington Road near Scenic Boulevard. She died at the scene.

The driver did not stop and investigators believe that the car was travelling at high speed before the crash.

The car was later found dumped at a Clayton property at 11pm.

Friends in Sri Lanka were devastated by the circumstances surrounding her death.

They described Ms Perara as adventurous, with a passion for photography and travel.

Friend Rashmika told the Herald Sun, ‘everyone is quite disturbed by what happened.’

‘All her friends in (Sri) Lanka miss her so much.’

‘She is now in a better place.’

An avid traveler, Ms Perara was planning a trip to Bali in December and frequently used two Instagram accounts to blog her travels.

Grieving friends have since taken to the pages to pay their condolences.

‘Rest in Peace, Nangi,’, wrote friend Demintha Chathuraka Jayasinghe.

‘Another life lost because of a reckless driver.’

Monash University offered condolences to the family and urged students to seek assistance for grief.

According to the Herald Sun, the family is believed to be travelling to Australia.

Investigators are keen to speak to any witnesses or anyone that may have dashcam footage.
