Navy relief teams kept on standby to engage in flood emergencies

(UTV|COLOMBO) – With the intermittent rains prevailing in these days, as a prior preparation for the possible flood emergencies and natural disasters, Sri Lanka Navy has deployed several relief teams at identified locations.

Accordingly, the Navy has deployed relief teams belonging to the Rapid Response Rescue and Relief Unit (4RU) and Navy Diving Unit, at Thawalama and Neluwa areas in Southern Province.

Further, during the past few days, as a prior precaution to minimize the flood effect, Navy removed the debris collected underside of several bridges and canals which were posing a flood threat in various areas in the island.

One of such programmes was conducted at Dodangoda bridge in Galle area on 28th October 2019. Accordingly, a Navy diving team attached to Southern Naval Command removed debris collected underside of the bridge which were posing a flood threat for the residents of the river banks. The team swiftly cleared debris making way for proper downstream of water.

Sri Lanka Navy said it is prepared to assist the general public at any disastrous situation in the country.
