(UTV|COLOMBO) – Parliamentarian S. B. Dissanayake’s 2 Security Personnel who opened fire in Ginigathhena, injuring 2 persons, have been remanded until 11 November.
The first shooting of the forthcoming Presidential election campaign occurred at Ginigathhena in the Nuwara Eliya District yesterday (06) when Security Personnel of SLPP supporter and Parliamentarian S.B. Dissanayake’s security detail opened fire at people on the roadside who appeared to be in the way of the politician’s vehicle convoy.
Two persons were injured in the shooting, police said. The injured persons were initially treated at the Kaligama hospital and later transferred to the Karawanella hospital. Police Media Spokesman SSP Ruwan Gunasekera said officers in Dissanayake’s back-up security vehicle had opened fire at the persons blocking the convoy.
The shooting marks the first gun violence of the 2019 Presidential election season which had been one of the quietest since the violence-ridden elections during the previous regime.
S.B.Dissanayake is a SLFP member currently campaigning for Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
