(UTV|COLOMBO) – During a search conducted in the seas off Pesalai in Mannar, the Navy found a haul of about 1,448 kilogrammes of beedi leaves yesterday (09).
During a patrol carried out by the Navy in search of illegal activities at sea, a suspicious package drifting in the seas had been spotted. When searched, 29 such parcels were recovered by the Navy. The 29 parcels contained about 1,448 kilogrammes of beedi leaves in total.
It is believed that the drug traffickers might have left behind the package, in fear of continuous Naval patrols. The seized stock of beedi leaves will be handed over to Jaffna customs for onward action.
Meanwhile, the Navy has found nearly 60 tons of beedi leaves this year alone and will continue to tighten its grip on such activities taking place in the waters around the island.
