‘Prison term for illegal water consumption’

(UTV|COLOMBO) – State Minister of Water Supply Facilities Vasudeva Nanayakkara says steps will be taken to amend existing laws to hand persons found guilty of illegal water consumption, a prison term.

When inquired by a prominent online news portal, the State Minister said accordingly older laws which only impose a minor fine against such violations will be made stricter.

However the State Minister noted low income persons who are found to have illegally consumed water will face lesser punishments.

Meanwhile State Minister Nanayakkara also said water tariffs are likely to be increased according to standard procedure every three years, however this task was not seen through by previous governments in power.

He explained that as water remains an essential utility, tariffs were maintained without increase.

However the State Minister it is now under consideration as to whether to impose higher tariffs on consumers who record high water consumption.
