(UTV|COLOMBO) – Acting Inspector General of Police Chandana Wickramaratne has tabled details before Speaker of House Karu Jayasuriya pertaining to the process followed when arresting Parliamentarian Patali Champika Ranawaka.
A spokesman at the Office of the Speaker when contacted by a prominent online news portal in the isle has said Acting IGP Wickramaratne called on the Speaker on Friday evening.
The Acting IGP was summoned to Parliament following a decision reached at a recently held party leaders meeting.
The Speaker had informed the Acting IGP of how due protocol when arresting a Member of Parliament was violated in the arrest of MP Patali Champika Ranawaka.
MP Ranawaka was arrested at his residence by officers of the Colombo Crimes Division on the 18th of December over an accident reported in 2016 in Rajagiriya.
The case, that was closed, was reopened recently. MP Ranawaka was held in remand custody over four days and was released on bail on the 24th of December by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.
Speaker Karu Jayasuriya in a statement issued following the MPs arrest said, the arrest violated due procedures upheld so far by the current Parliament regarding arrests of Members of Parliament.
