‘Mahaweli Prathiba’ Cultural Festival at Nelum Pokuna on April 27

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – “Mahaweli Prathiba” Cultural Festival organized to portray the artistic talents of children of Mahaweli Zones will be held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre, at 6.00 p.m. on April 27.

The Mahaweli Development programme is known as the largest multipurpose national development programme in the history of Sri Lanka and it consists of 10 zones and covers 40% of the Island area.

According to a concept of President Maithripala Sirisena, the Mahaweli Cultural Unit and the Mahaweli Centre jointly organized the ‘Mahaweli Prathiba’ Cultural Festival with the aim of enhancing artistic talents of school children in Mahaweli Zones.

Identification of artistic abilities, providing guidance to enhance artistic talents, promoting cultural events to protect Sri Lankan identity, creating a stage for the children of Mahaweli Zones to present their talents locally as well as internationally, are among the long term objectives of this event.

This time the ‘Mahaweli Prathiba’ Cultural Festival is to be held with the participation of over 850 children in Mahaweli Zones, and it will comprises of colourful competitions, singing, dancing and announcing competitions, debates, essay reading, the arts, writing lyrics and short drama competitions.

It is significant that all the art and cultural creations lined up under the theme Future Mahaweli and through this initiative, it is expected to continuously keep the Mahaweli children engaged in cultural activities and it would provide healing relief to the tired eyes and the hearts of the farming community in the Mahaweli zones.
