Court rules Geetha disqualified to be Parliamentarian

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – The Court of Appeal today (03) ruled that Parliamentarian Geetha Kumarasinghe was disqualified to be a Member of Parliament (MP) as she holds dual citizenship.

A petition was presented in March 2015 by four individuals from Galle challenging Ms. Kumarasinghe’s election to Parliament from the District at the last General Election, due to her holding citizenship in Sri Lanka and Switzerland.

The Attorney General (AG) had earlier informed the Court of Appeal that Ms. Kumarasinghe was still a citizen of Switzerland and according to the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, a person who has dual citizenship cannot be an MP.

However, Ms. Kumarasinghe said that she would file a case in the Supreme Court against the Appeal Court’s ruling which deprived her from her seat in Parliament.
