Thailand donates B2m to help flood-stricken Sri Lanka

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – The Thai government is donating 2 million baht to help Sri Lanka recover from its worst flooding and landslides in 14-years, the Bangkok Post reported.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Busadee Santipitaks said on Thursday the government approved the sum for Sri Lanka as the Sri Lankan embassy in Bangkok was receiving donations from the public.

The flooding and mudslides began on May 25. Miss Busadee said that according to a UN report, 630,000 people have been affected, 203 have died and 96 are missing. About 1,500 houses were completely destroyed and over 6,000 houses were damaged.

Miss Busadee said Thailand and Sri Lanka enjoy a good relationship in all aspects, including religion and culture. The Sri Lankan government donated US$50,000 (about1.7 million baht) to Thailand when the South suffered flooding early this year.

Thailand earlier donated 2 million baht to help Sri Lanka when it faced its worst drought in four decades.
