No shortage of Dengue medicine

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – The Minister of Health Dr. Rajitha Senaratne has once again reiterated that there is no shortage of the medicine used for the treatment of dengue cases.

Speaking in Parliament this afternoon Minister Senaratne said the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) is circulating false rumours.

Minister Senarathne said there is no shortage of the Dextran 40 tablets that are given to dengue patients adding that certain factions including the GMOA are circulating false rumours.

The Minister said however the government has adequate stocks of the tablet and a shipment is due to arrive Wednesday morning adding that this medication is not something available over the counter as it is exchanged between governments.

Minister Senarathne said it is not available in pharmacies because if it is given to patients with a common fever it will be ineffective on dengue cases adding that the government of Thailand issues stocks of this medicine on a monthly basis, following which the ministry distributes it throughout the island.

Minister Senarathne said this medication is acquired upon agreements between governments in order to protect its standard.
