(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – The Ministry of Fisheries is considering placing a fishing ban on Giraa fish.
The Ministry stated that a special meeting will be held with the fishing community in Chilaw today (26th Thursday).
Shallow waters around tropical countries such as Sri Lanka make it a favourable environment for Giraa fish.
The fish species generally grows up to 3-4 feet long, with the potential to grow larger.
The Ministry of fisheries stated that while it is not a popular food with Sri Lankans, in many other states it is consumed regularly.
Environmentalists and the fishing community have informed the Ministry that Giraa fish are on the verge of extinction, as they are being caught on a regular basis.
The Ministry stated that it is considering the ban as a result.
