Bangladesh and Sri Lanka draw Chittagong Test

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have battled to a draw in a high-scoring Test match in Chittagong.

Bangladesh came into Day 5 trailing the Sri Lankans by 119, with seven wickets in hand.

But a steady 180-run stand between batsmen Mominul Haque and Liton Das brought the Tigers through safely. In the process Haque scored his second century of the match, becoming the first Bangladeshi batsman to do so in Test cricket. He scored 176 in the first innings and 106 in the second, also gaining him the record for the highest number of runs scored by a Bangladeshi batsman in a Test match.

Das scored 94, redeeming his golden duck from the first innings.

Rangana Herath was the most successful of the Sri Lankan bowlers, taking three wickets for 150 runs in the first innings wickets and two for 80 in the second.

At the end of 100 overs, Bangladesh was 307-5, with a 107 run lead over the Sri Lankans and with Mahmudullah and Mosadek Hossain unbeaten at the crease.

Bangladesh made a strong showing in the first innings, scoring 513 thanks to the contributions of Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim (92), but centuries from Dhananjaya de Silva, Roshen Silva and Kusal Mendis carried Sri Lanka to a mammoth 713-9.

Bangladesh’s response started well, with a fifty partnership from openers Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes but three quick wickets before stumps were called on Saturday had fans worried about the Tigers’ prospects.

Mominul Haque was declared Player of the Match.
