“Kankasanthurai – Point Pedro Road, which was closed for 27-years will be open to public,” says the President in Jaffna

(UTV|COLOMBO) – President Maithripala Sirisena says the AB-21 road Kankasanthurai to Point Pedro, which had been closed since June 20, 1990, will be opened for the public.

The President made these remarks addressing a public rally held in Jaffna, yesterday (05). ‘The opening of this road will help to reduce the total distance people have to travel by 50 Kilometers’ the President said, adding that as the President, he will fulfill his responsibilities irrespective of differences to deliver the benefits of the development in a fair manner to the people in Jaffna too.

President Sirisena emphasized that he is committed to build national reconciliation and peace in the country and further said that he is ready to do whatever sacrifice to achieve this objective. ‘The people in the North as well as in the South elected him as the President of this country with the aspiration of creating a free and democratic society,’ the President said. He added that during the past three years he has done significant work in this regard.

Already 75% of the process of releasing the lands to the displaced persons in Jaffna has been completed and the remaining lands will also be released to the people shortly, he said.

Addressing the gathering, the President recalling the voices of the people about the missing persons said that he is committed to doing justice in this regard. The President further said that he is ready to provide every possible assistance to the family members of the missing persons to ensure their well being and assured that upon their requests he is ready to hold discussions with them at any time.

This public rally was held at the Jaffna Municipal Council grounds with the participation of a large crowd, and they warmly welcomed the President.

Governor of the Northern Province, Reginald Cooray, Parliamentarian Angajan Ramanathan and the candidates contesting for the Jaffna Municipal Council at the upcoming election participated in this public rally.

Meanwhile, the President also participated in a public rally held in Vavuniya. This public rally was organized to ensure the victory of the SLFP candidates in Vavuniya district and the public rally was held at the Young Star Ground in Vavuniya with the participation of a large crowd.

The people gathered at the ground warmly welcomed the President. Addressing the gathering the President said that when serving the public he will never consider the ethnic, religious, colour and party differences.

Referring to pamphlets distributed by an opposition party claiming that only one party has served the people in Vavuniya, the President pointed out that he has implemented several programmes by appointing a Presidential Task comprising of Ministers and Members of Parliament from all the political parties for the development of the Northern province including Vavuniya to deliver the benefits of development, to the people.

President Sirisena requested all the politicians in the North as well as in the South, not to divide the people politically in the name of development.

Vavuniya district Parliamentarian, Cader Mustapha and others participated in this public rally.
