UN Secretary-General Responds to Trump’s ban on Syrian refugees

(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres commented yesterday (2nd Thursday) on US President Donald Trump’s decision to halt the Syrian refugee program in the country.

Al Jazeera tweeted a video where Guterres commented on the ineffectiveness of closing down the program, stating that these “measures violate our basic principles”, and that it would not deter terrorists from entering the US.

He further stated that resettlement must be taken into consideration in order to protect refugees, and that these directives will only spread anxiety and anger among people, that will “help trigger the kind of recruitment mechanisms that these (terrorist) organizations are now doing everywhere in the world”.

While iterating the importance of having strong measures relating to management of borders, Guterres also emphasized the need to not discriminate based on nationality, religion, or ethnicity when taking such measures.
