(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – The government is taking steps to amend the Cooperative act as the cooperative movement provides a great service to the people and the country said Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiudeen.
He made these comments at a ceremony held at Weeragama in Kuliyapitiyaat the Milk producers Multi-purpose Cooperative. The Department of Cooperative spent Rs 3.5 million and purchased 50 refrigerators for milk producers.
The Cooperative movement is a good concept and from the past it has supported the country in its development efforts. In some areas the Cooperatives even own hospitals but in some other places it has become a failure. I as the minister in charge of the subject will ensure that I protect the Cooperative movement.
In addition once in three months all the provincial ministers in charge of the cooperatives get together and take policy decisions after discussion.
