(UDHAYAM, CHENNAI) – A pending court case may stall the swearing-in of Sasikala Natarajan as Chief Minister of the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
The ceremony has been put on hold until the Supreme Court gives its verdict in the disproportionate assets case.
Satta Panchayat Iyakkam, a social organization from Tamil Nadu, has reportedly moved a Public Interest Litigation in the apex court, asking for a stay on the ceremony till the verdict is out.
Both former Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa and Sasikala were accused in the case and were even convicted by a court in Bengaluru, but the Karnataka High Court reversed the order.
According to CNN News18, the Governor of Tamil Nadu, C Vidyasagar Rao, had cancelled his plans to travel to Chennai for the oath-taking ceremony, which was likely to be held at the Madras University.
Earlier this week, expelled AIADMK MP, Sasikala Pushpa, had written a letter to the Prime Minister, criticizing the move to make ‘Chinamma’ (as Sasikala is known) the state’s Chief Minister , alleging that she has a “criminal background”.
