Steve Smith makes return to cricket in Canada

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Former Australian Captain Steve Smith enjoyed a rollercoaster return to competitive cricket on Friday (29) as he took to the field in a Twenty20 (T20) match in Canada.

Smith is serving a 12-month ban from international matches and domestic fixtures in Australia for his part in the ball tampering scandal in South Africa, but has been allowed to turn out for the Toronto Nationals as they opened the Global T20 Canada League against the Vancouver Knights.

Smith was given a standing ovation from Canadian fans as he walked back from the crease after playing a starring role in his team’s run chase.

He then spoke publicly for the first time in three months after clubbing his way to a confidence-boosting half century.

Despite the highs of an impressive return to professional cricket following his 12-month ban for his role in the ball-tampering scandal which rocked Australian cricket, Smith spoke of the low moments of watching his former Aussie teammates get blown off the park during their limited overs tour of England.
