(UTV|COLOMBO) – The other day came word that Netflix had acquired actor/director Andy Serkis’ “Mowgli,” a dark and mostly motion capture film adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s “The Jungle Book”. Unlike the recent Disney film, Serkis’ take keeps the more sinister and adult elements of the original literary work intact.
Netflix must like what they’ve seen as the streaming giant is already signing up with Serkis again, this time acquiring his planned contemporary-set film adaptation of the classic George Orwell 1945 novel “Animal Farm” which Serkis has been set to direct for a number of years.
The original work was a heavily allegorical commentary on the Russian revolution of 1917 and the subsequent Stalinist regime of the Soviet Union. The story sees a group of animals rebel against the humans who own the farm to win their independence.
They create a utopian environment based on equality, but a pig named Napoleon twists the original intent – eliminating his rivals and enacting commandments which means “some animals are more equal than others”. Serkis, Matt Reeves, Rafi Chrohn, Jonathan Cavendish and Adam Kassan will produce.
