“The Grudge” reboot hit by a lawsuit

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The upcoming reboot of the supernatural horror franchise “The Grudge” has hit a snag. Taka lchise, producer of the original “Ju-On” franchise which inspired the 2004 U.S. remake and its sequels, has filed a breach of contract lawsuit.

Production company Good Universe acquired the rights to the film and planned to develop it on the condition Ichise be given a producer credit and paid an agreed upon fee. The suit claims that despite the contract, Good Universe has not given Ichise a producer credit.

The lawsuit comes as production on the remake, simply titled “Grudge,” is underway and already well into filming. Nicolas Pesce (“The Eyes of My Mother”) helms the film which stars Andrea Riseborough, Demian Bichir, John Cho, Lin Shaye, Jacki Weaver, Betty Gilpin, William Sadler, and Frankie Faison.

The original dealt with a murder/suicide in a house in Japan, and the ghostly hauntings that followed. The remake, which again is being produced by Sam Raimi, is shifting to American suburbia. The new “The Grudge” opens August 16th 2019.
