Sony scraps “Silver & Black” for solo films

(UTV|COLOMBO) – “Venom” isn’t even out yet, but it looks like the switch of that film from a likely R to a PG-13 is just the start of some major re-tooling of Sony’s planned mini cinematic universe.

Variety reports that the studio will likely scrap its proposed “Silver & Black” film which would’ve seen a team-up of comics characters Black Cat and Silver Sable. Gina Prince-Bythewood was to helm the film which has had a few setbacks.

Now, the plan is to break those two titular characters out into their own films with “Black Cat” coming first. Columbia Pictures president Sanford Panitch says: “We believe Black Cat is enough of her own character with a great backstory and a canon of material to draw from to justify her own film.”

Prince-Bythewood isn’t expected to helm the film, but will likely stay on as an executive producer. The studio is also still developing “Silk” which follows a Korean-American woman with similar powers to Spider-Man, the “Kraven the Hunter” film with Richard Wenk penning, and the “Morbius the Living Vampire” film with Jared Leto starring and Daniel Espinosa helming. The latter this week was the subject of rumors suggesting the character of Martine Bancroft will serve as the female lead.

Sony has also reportedly had discussions about heroes Nightwatch and Jackpot getting their own films. All of this depends on how well “Venom” does both critically and commercially when it opens in early October.
