Special investigation launched on clinical waste floating in Puttalam Sea

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Marine Environment Protection Authority on Monday (13) sated that a special investigation has been launched into clinical waste floating within a 10 Kilometre stretch in Puttalam Sea.

Thousands of expired medicines, bottles, polythene packages and syringes have found there way to the shores of Puttalam and neighbouring regions in Sri Lanka, the India Today reported.

According to the report, all these expired medicines and bottles have seals and manufacturing stamps of India.

The Puttalam Fisheries Officials suspect that the medical waste is coming from the Indian side and that it was disposed off in the sea in a hazardous manner.

The fishermen in the region fear that this will affect the fish in the sea and in turn their livelihood.

Officials in the region will begin a probe on how the medical waste is reaching the Sri Lankan waters.
