Italy declares state of emergency over bridge collapse

(UTV|COLOMBO) Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte declared a 12-month state of emergency in the Liguria region Wednesday over the collapse of a bridge in Genoa Tuesday that killed more than 30 people.

The government also agreed to allocate an initial €5 million toward emergency operations in the area, including to assist displaced families and to clear rubble.

The bridge collapse has raised broader questions and criticism of the country’s aging infrastructure.

In a statement from the interior ministry, Conte called for an update to how the country monitors its infrastructure that was built decades ago, in order to better guarantee safety on Italy’s roads.
