Earthquake jolts New Zealand; Civil Defence says no tsunami threat

(UTV|COLOMBO) – A powerful earthquake has been felt in central New Zealand.

Geonet originally recorded four moderate earthquakes from Te Kaha in the North, to Arthur’s Pass in the South between 4.20 PM and 4.24 PM.

However, it later retracted these, and a magnitude 6.8 quake was found to have struck South of the Kermadec Islands at 4.19 PM.

After an initial assessment, Civil Defence has said there is no tsunami risk for New Zealand.
