(UDHAYAM, COLOMBO) – Sri Lanka and the United State have held discussions pertaining issues surrounding democracy, human rights and economic growth in the country.
The discussions were held between Minister of Foreign Affairs Mangala Samaraweera and the visiting Representatives of the US Congress.
A bi-partisan group of Representatives of the US Congress arrived in the island on Monday to hold discussions with an aim to strengthen democratic institutions and deepening bilateral relations between the two countries.
Foreign Minister Samaraweera said the visit of the delegation signaled the shared commitment of the United States and Sri Lanka to democracy and legislative oversight.
The statement added that extensive discussions were held pertaining to Human Rights, reconciliation and on the enactment of a new constitution.
The US Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives Atul Keshap also attended the event.
The US Congressmen held discussions with the President, Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition and several parliamentarians during their stay.
